Why would a manager intentionally contact you only when you're on a call?

I meet with one of my team members every few weeks for a catchup. I've noticed that every single time my boss sees me on a call with this coworker (I guess she's closely monitoring statuses), she messages me with the most random question. It took me a while to realize it was intentional.

She is a micromanager, but even then, what would be the motive behind doing that? What does it accomplish?

Commenters speculated about what might be going on here.

Vixenrise 10 she's training you like a pavlov dog. every time you have a nice private conversation she rings the little bell and you have to go. attend to her. eventually you'll start associating those catchups with the annoyance of her interrupting and you'll either make them shorter or stop having them altogether. it's not about the random question. it's about making sure you never forget who's really in charge of your attention.

Zestyclose_Welder864 Original Poster's Reply Yikes. That makes sense but is bizarre considering she's the one who encouraged me to have these.

pangalacticcourier This is all about control, OP, but you can flip it around. Text or email back: "I'm on a critical call. I'll contact you as soon as I'm done."

Zestyclose_Welder864 Original Poster's Reply Control for what though? I do my work and keep my head down. Work is a small fraction of my life. I would do this but she knows my calendar, so she knows I'm on a call with my coworker (her other direct report)

mx-raebees Unless you are in a role where missing a ping could mean someone d ng or losing millions of dollars, ignore pings until you're actually free

Zestyclose_Welder864 Original Poster's Reply The exact message was "Hi, how are you?" which she has never, ever asked me.

orangecookiez In a word: control. The manager is power-tripping, and thinks she's entitled to all your time and attention. Ask me how I know.

KookyDiver2558 Make her wait until you are off the call. Why are you jumping when she snaps her finger? from managers flexes me off, I'd get off the call and wait 10 minutes then message her back with as few words as possible.

bwill1200 Just ignore it until your meeting is done.

OrganicMix3499 Nah, she still wins. Ignoring her while on a call is the only way you win.

BiggOnion Agree totally, and have seen lots of these in my career. Worked at a bank, where everyone had 'senior' or 'Vice President' in front of their names, including me. But some folks took it far....would have a secretary or assistant call me FOR THEM, and ask me to hold while they transferred me, and I flat out said no, and hung up. A few would keep doing it, and I'd ask them if they had trouble pushing four buttons on a phone. Personally, I'd be more in her face, and walk into their office

Kindly-Might-1879 You could send a "helpful" text. "Hey, I notice you have questions when I'm on a call, so just letting you know I'm occupied 2-3pm. I have 5 minutes right now if you have a question. Do it every time you have a call, as much as needed to annoy her.
